Discussion Question:
:
WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE AFRAID OF CLOWNS?
Most logical answer:
Its strange how clowns send so many people screaming n closing their eyes. (especially certain adults in shopping malls!) Actually, maybe not.
I personally blame the damn stupid clown show "IT" shown like 20 years ago (if u dont know google it up). whoever read or watched the godforsaken killer clown show "It" by Stephen King usually have this phobia/fear of clowns.( i bet if ur from my generation u would strongly agree!)
smaller kids on the other hand just dislike unfamiliar faces, exaggerated facial features and things that don't look human in their small world. (facial recognition starts at age 1 plus) and they cant differentiate between reality n fantasy. thats why kids below 3 years old cry n bawl like an animal when they usually see me. (in their mind i'm an alien ready to eat em up)
The official term for this irrational aversion to red-nosed entertainers is coulrophobia. There are many clown lovers n supporters but many are also creeped out by clowns, the fear runs much deeper for others, affecting their daily lives. (should have seen adults SCREAMING n running away in parties/ malls when i go near- i myself feel more scared of them when they react so suddenly- yes guys are also freaked out n hide behind their gfs/ mothers. such sissys i say!)
I did some research and several theories attempt to explain the origins of the phobia, though none seem definitive:
One of the more interesting comes from Kathryn Cillick. She believes most people are afraid of clowns because it's impossible to gauge a clown's true emotions. Thanks to painted-on smiles, people can't distinguish if the clown is as happy as he seems or if he's actually about to bite somebody's face off.
In a 2004 review article for Trinity University, Joseph Durwin postulates that there are two commonly accepted schools of thought. One is that the fear is based in a negative personal experience with a clown at a young age. The second theory is that mass media has created a hype surrounding evil clowns such that even children who are not personally exposed to clowns are trained to dislike or fear them.
Several celebrities are decidedly anti-clown. Rapper P. Diddy has a "no clown" clause in his concert contracts. Johnny Depp had nightmares of clowns as a kid. And, of course there's Bart Simpson, whose utterance "Can't sleep, clown will eat me" speaks volumes about his feelings on the subject
Thank goodness Jerry Lewis' "The Day the Clown Cried" was never released, lest we all be in straitjackets.
In conclusion i tell all kids and all adults that the clown u watched in IT/ scary clown movies/ horror zombie clown killer shows are all- GUYS.
dont need be afraid of Creampuff u know why? cause she is a GIRL clown and she's ur nice nice fren.
*come hold hands and take photo/ shake hands. then share a joke or ask a silly yes/no question.* :) this usually breaks the ice n calms the kid (and parent) down alot! haha..and that is how i still have my popular job even after 3 years!
to all u phobia striken ppl out there- OVERCOME UR PHOBIA OF CLOWNS. dont let fear take control of any part of ur life. no need to worry or be afraid of things u dont know/ understand.
we are all nice nice educated people behind the mask of plastic smiles n moppy hair! get to know us and u will love us for sure! :)
